Our Camp Philosophy

The Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps offer a Jewish residential camp program designed to help Jewish youth develop personal identity and self-esteem, build relationships, learn about Judaism, have fun and increase their long-term commitment to their families, synagogues and communities.

Safety (both emotional and physical) is our primary concern – each and every camper’s welfare is taken into account at all times (as is that of every staff member).

Camp is a place where kids can experience total Jewish living in a unique setting with natural beauty and excellent facilities.  Campers take part in physical, social and educational activities that are safe, educational and fun.  Our program provides a balance of recreational, religious and cultural experiences.

Every member of our staff has a direct responsibility to implement our ideals by teaching, by personal example, and by participating positively in all aspects of our program. We, the staff members, must learn before we can teach.  We are Jewish role models for our campers and have the opportunity to make a lifelong impact on our children.

At camp, Judaism is not merely a programming device – it is our essence.  The pattern of our day is uniquely Jewish.  Prayer is a component.  Meals are blessed.  Many of the songs we sing are in Hebrew or have Jewish content.  Our creative arts reflect our culture.  Programming focuses on a theme with which campers become familiar.  While knowledge acquisition is valued, the deepening of identity and commitment is our primary goal.

Why Work Here?

Being a counselor is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have in your entire life. Overnight summer camp is truly the key to a young person’s journey to adulthood, to responsibility, creativity, and independence. Camp provides the opportunity for campers to stretch their wings without their parents over their shoulders to truly become the people they want to be. Their identity and growth lies in the hands of you, the staff, that work so closely with them, acting as a parent, friend, mentor, and authority figure. Whether you are a counselor, specialist, or senior staff member, you can be the factor in changing the world, one child at a time.

At Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps, our first priority is the campers and creating transformative experiences for them, but we also care deeply about the staff and their personal and professional journeys. It is extremely important to us that the staff as well as the campers get a chance to become who they want to be, to learn, and to grow.

If you are a high school graduate and would like to come work at camp, you are eligible to be a counselor or a specialist. Counselors are the backbone of our camp community; they do not just act as role models for their own cabin, but also for the entire camp. Specialists provide particular programming and activities that campers participate throughout the day. Potential senior staff members must have experience in supervision, programming, and education. We are always looking for new staff members with new skills and ideas. Even without previous experience in camping, you can still apply to work at Wilshire Boulevard Temple Camps!

Feel free to contact Jen Shankman, Director, with any questions or concerns.
